Strat’s Description:
-
- Laughingstocks of the ‘60s now seriously good
- Cup finals: Boston (119 points) tops New York (109)
- Montreal (108 points), Chicago (107), Minnesota (86), Toronto (80)
For the first time since 1960, the top two regular-season teams faced off in the Stanley Cup finals. In the ‘60s, Boston and New York regularly were the only teams not to make the playoffs at all. Different now: Phil Esposito (66 goals) and Bobby Orr (37 goals, 117 points) led Boston’s No. 1 offense. The Rangers’ Goal-A-Game (GAG) Line of Jean Ratelle, Vic Hadfield and Rod Gilbert joined defenseman Brad Park … Montreal had new coach Scotty Bowman. Bobby Hull again scored 50 goals for Chicago.
